Wailea Canoe Club continued its dominance in the top men’s races while also getting a breakthrough victory en route to posting a season-high 41 points while hosting the Kamehameha Regatta on Saturday at Kahului Harbor.
For the fifth time in five Maui County Hawaiian Canoe Association regattas this season, Wailea won the men’s 40, freshman, sophomore and open races.
The crew of Kekoa Cramer, Dane Dudoit, Felipe Gomes, Triston Kaho’okele-Santos, Joshua Kekupa’a Nae’ole and Kekoa Santos won the 1 1/2-mile men’s open race in a time of 12 minutes, 12.43 seconds, finishing more than 48 seconds faster than runner-up Hawaiian (13:00.78).
Another sizable victory for Wailea came in the men’s junior race. Kaho’okele-Santos joined Carl Gardner, Anthony Resch, Will Rich, J.R. Rios and Nalu Sampson in the canoe to notch their club’s fourth straight victory in the 1-mile race in a time of 8:09.82, nearly 40 seconds better than Hawaiian (8:49.71).

Dudoit, Kekupa’a Nae’ole, Rios and Sampson also picked up Wailea’s fourth straight win in the men’s open four race as they edged Napili, 4:13.05 to 4:15.95.
Wailea broke through for its first win of the season in the mixed open race as Rich, Misty Branco, Dawnalyn Fujiwara, Noa Kamalu, Kristina Moyers and Austin Talley won in 4:16.72, crossing just ahead of Hawaiian (4:17.81).
Meanwhile, Hawaiian continued its strong run through the MCHCA season, collecting 24 wins Saturday for 176 points that upped its season total to 871. Kihei was second with 85 points, followed by Napili (61), Na Kai Ewalu (55), Lae’ula O Kai (54), Wailea, Lahaina (38), Kahana (4) and Hana (1).
The Keiki O Maui Regatta is set for next Saturday at Hanakao’o (Canoe) Beach.
